A major progress has been achieved in fighting cross-border crime in KwaZulu-Natal with arrests of police officers who are ring- leaders and the recovery of stolen vehicles, and drugs worth multi-million of rands.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, was briefed by police management on progress made since the intervention by the National and the Provincial governments to fight mainly the theft of vehicles.

The progress is sequel to the visit by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Honourable Jacob Zuma, who, a few months ago engaged with the community and committed to stepping up efforts of fighting cross -border crime.

Today, MEC Kaunda, who was in KwaSkhemelele in uMkhanyakude District was briefed on the recovery of seven vehicles since April 2017 and the arrest of three police officers in Kosi Bay. The latest arrest brings to (14) the number of police arrested through their involvement in nefarious activities along the borders.

Yesterday, a suspect was also caught and arrested transporting drugs estimated at a street value of R140 million. The suspect was believed to be transporting these drugs from Mozambique to Gauteng.

Addressing the community of KwaSkhemelele during the opening of the local satellite police station, Kaunda reaffirmed government’s commitment of fighting cross-border crime.

“We are pleased with the progress that has been recorded here since the intervention by President Zuma. The recovery of seven (7) vehicles, including eight (8) that were recovered in Phongolo is an indication of a high level of dedication by the police. We will continue to arrest more police officers who are involved in criminal activities because we want to clean our system. The progress we are making here is tangible evidence that as government we take the concerns raised by our communities seriously. We have also achieved a lot in building trust between the police and the community. There is now improvement in information sharing,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda, mayors and iNkosi Mabhudu Tembe led a walkabout and engagement with the business community in the area, mobilizing them to join the movement to fight against crime.

The opening of KwaSkhemelele satellite station will improve policing in the corridor between Mhlabuyalingana and Manguzi. This is in addition to a R90 million upgrade of the Manguzi police station.

“We are investing all necessary resources to end the scourge of vehicle theft and all other forms of crime in the area. We commend the police for excellent work,” said Kaunda.
