Intoxicated driver crashes into a metal barrier in Canelands

A heavily intoxicated driver crashed his white Mercedes Benz A200 while traveling on Vincent Dickenson Road in Canelands.

A member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was returning from a callout when the Officer witnessed the vehicle crash into a metal barrier before it spun around and faced oncoming traffic. The RUSA Member stopped to assist and found that the driver did not suffer any injuries.

The man was unstable on his feet and fell over several times. He reeked of alcohol and his speech was slurred. The driver was not aware that he was involved in an accident. He informed Reaction Officers that he worked at the Finance Department for the Ethekwini Municipality. This could not be verified. While awaiting the arrival of authorities, the driver made several attempts to bribe the Reaction Officer with cash. The Officer declined the offer.

On arrival of Metro Police and the Verulam SAPS, it was decided that charges could not be brought against the driver due to no other vehicles being involved in the accident.

He was then released by Police without charge.
