Four men and a ten-year-old boy were killed when two light motor vehicles collided head-on on the R502 between Orkney and Potchefstroom in the North West Province this evening The cause of the accident remains unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the vehicles had ploughed into one another and lay wedged together in the roadway. A driver and his two passengers of the first vehicle had all sustained critical injuries and died prior to the arrival of medics.

The driver of the second vehicle and his ten-year-old son were also killed on impact. All of the bodies were entrapped in the crumpled wreckage and had to be cut free by firefighters using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment.

The R502 was closed while Netcare911 Paramedics and emergency service personnel cleared the scene.
