National Transport Deputy Minister Hon. Lisa Mangcu and Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha descended on Rietberg Primary School to handover 359 bicycles to learners of Moses Mabida SSS and Rietberg Primary School.

The initiative is part of the National Transport Department's Shova Kalula (Ride Easy) Bicycle Project aimed at ensuring that more learners get to school easily.

The programme is part of the overall learner transport programme that is currently being implemented across the country by provinces. The Shova Kalula Programme is part of the broader the learner transport programme by focusing on learners who walk less than 5 km and walk more than 3 km to schools.

Other learners on the learner transport programme are being ferried through buses and taxis through contracts that are managed by the provinces.

The objective of the programme is to promote cycling as a low-cost mobility solution, which shall enhance rural accessibility and urban mobility to enable the underserved communities to participate in socio- economic opportunities, through developmental support to vulnerable groups as identified such as learners and farm workers.
