Suspect killed in a shootout in Verulam CBD

One suspect was killed, a second teenager arrested and two firearms have been recovered during a robbery in progress at a Shell Service Station on Moss Street in the Verulam - KZN.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the Verulam SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, Verulam SAPS Sector Managers and SAPS Crime Prevention conducted an intelligence-driven operation after receiving information that three suspects were planning to rob the service station. 

Law Enforcement Officers surrounded the premises in unmarked vehicles. Reaction Officers entered the convenience store shortly after the robbers entered. The suspects opened fire in an attempt to evade arrest. Reaction Officers returned fire and shot one of the men in the head. He fled towards the Verulam Bus Rank on Ireland Street and collapsed. A 9mm pistol was recovered in his possession. 

A 19-year-old suspect was pursued by RUSA Members and the Verulam SAPS. He was apprehended in a bush along the R102. A firearm was recovered in his possession.
