A cane knife-wielding suspect was shot and killed after he attempted to hack a resident in Fairbreeze - KZN.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Tongaat Operations Centre received a call of a shooting. Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and on arrival, discovered a male who sustained a single gunshot wound to his right femur. He succumbed to his injuries on scene due to excessive blood loss.

It was established that the deceased was a known scrap collector in the area. He allegedly entered a property today (Thursday) and was in the process of stealing valuables from a yard when he was spotted by a neighbour.

He fled the scene, but later returned and threw stones at a bakkie belonging to the neighbour who pursued him earlier today. The resident opened his driveway gate to confront the male.

The deceased allegedly produced a cane knife and charged at the male. The homeowner drew his licensed firearm and shot him once in the leg. The injured male fled, but collapsed a few meters away.

The fatally injured man was also found in possession of a large kitchen knife.
