A multi-disciplinary operation involving the Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, SAPS Counter Intelligence Investigation Head Office, DPCI Gauteng Multi-Disciplinary Tracking Team, SAPS Gauteng TRT, SAPS Anti-Gang Unit, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect has led to the arrest of five (5) suspects linked to a truck hijacking syndicate operating across Gauteng.
Intelligence received indicated that the suspects, posing as law enforcement officials in SAPS and Traffic Police uniforms, were using two (2) motor vehicles to carry out hijackings. Law enforcement members were immediately alerted when the suspects were reported to be committing a truck hijacking on the R25 Modderfontein Road in the Sabenya area.
Upon arrival, the operational teams observed the hijacked truck and both suspect vehicles traveling together. Acting swiftly, the teams managed to intercept the truck. One suspect attempted to flee into a nearby veld but was apprehended. The hijacked truck, along with stolen goods valued at R5 million, was recovered and secured.
The responding teams also managed to stop a Hyundai Accent and a Hyundai IX35. Inside the Hyundai Accent, two suspects dressed in EMPD uniforms were arrested, and the truck driver — held hostage — was safely secured. Two more suspects were found in the Hyundai IX35, wearing SAPS reflective jackets.
Following further investigation, it was revealed that one of the suspects is a former JMPD officer.
Investigations are continuing to link the suspects to other hijackings and criminal activities across the province.
