Motorists encouraged to remain vigilant during New Year Celebrations

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, urges motorists and residents to obey traffic rules, especially as many travel for New Year celebrations. He emphasised that all drivers must play their part in making the roads safer for everyone.

MEC Macie intimated that law-enforcement officers will continue to enforce the law rigorously, targeting dangerous driving behaviour and vehicles that are not road-worthy. “Law enforcers must not be lenient on any breach of the law or on drivers operating unsafe vehicles. Drunk drivers and speedsters must be arrested immediately,” he said.

Traffic volumes are expected to surge on Sunday as people return to work or head home from holidays. Law enforcement officers will remain alert.  the MEC urged  those who can travel on Saturday or Monday to do so.

The MEC further  commended law enforcement officers for stopping over 137 000 vehicles province-wide. More than 41 000 vehicles were inspected at weighbridges to verify load compliance, particularly for trucks. Approximately 700 vehicles were impounded for defects, and over 22 000 written notices were issued, mainly for moving-traffic violations.
