Mpumalanga MEC warns about excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, reckless and negligent driving, and a blatant disregard for traffic rules

“Excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, reckless and negligent driving, and a blatant disregard for traffic rules are the leading causes of fatal crashes, not only during the holiday season but throughout the year. We commend the traffic law-enforcement officers and police for their relentless effort to curb bad driver behaviour across the province.”

This is according to Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, following the arrest of three motorists on Wednesday, 31 December 2025.

A 51-year-old male was caught driving 165 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N3 toll road (Heidelberg → Villiers) in a Gauteng-registered sedan.

On the same route a 32-year-old male was detained for travelling 161 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

In a third incident, a 43-year-old male was arrested for driving 177 km/h on the same stretch.

All three cases have been registered with Groorvlei Police Station and the offenders are expected to appear in court soon.

MEC Macie believes that strong penalties for reckless and dangerous driving will contribute significantly to safer roads. “We call on motorists to adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations. Let us work together to end road carnage,” he said.
