23 March 2026 | From Arrive Alive

A tragic head-on collision has occurred on the R553 near Vanderbijlpark in the early hours of this morning, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Reports indicate that a motor vehicle travelling from Sebokeng towards Bophelong allegedly veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with an Albany truck. Despite attempts to avoid the crash, both vehicles collided and rolled on impact.

Confirmed Details:

- One fatality (driver of the motor vehicle)
- Truck driver sustained critical injuries
- Two additional occupants sustained minor injuries
- Road closures were implemented as emergency services and SAPS attended the scene

Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide, and investigations are currently underway. Efforts are also being made to locate the family of the deceased.

This latest crash comes just months after a devastating accident on 19 January 2026, when 14 learners lost their lives in a collision involving a truck and a minibus taxi on the same route.

The repeated loss of life on the R553 has raised serious concerns about road safety and driver behaviour along this busy stretch.

Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution.

Our thoughts are with all those affected.
