Ministerial Visit: Inspection on the R40 (before Hazyview and Bushbuckridge)

09 April 2026 | From Arrive Alive

On Day 2 of the Ministerial Visit to Mpumalanga, the focus was on critical road infrastructure, led by Minister Barbara Creecy, MEC Thulasizwe Thomo, Senior government officials and supported by SANRAL.

The entourage conducted site inspections of areas affected by slip failures along the R40, including sections before Hazyview and within the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. Particular attention was given to R40 Section 5 at km 50.4, between Dwarfslop and Acornhoek.

The assessment focused on damage caused by recent heavy rains and evaluated current road safety conditions. We are encouraged by the interventions SANRAL has implemented to strengthen response preparedness in the affected areas and enhance safety along this critical route.

The R40 road plays a critical role in linking the City of Mbombela to Bushbuckridge and further connecting Mpumalanga to Limpopo, including Phalaborwa. Therefore, ongoing measures to address the slip failures are a welcomed response.

"As a province, we will continue to support the efforts of the National Department of Transport in this response and across the various projects currently underway, as implemented by SANRAL" said MEC Thomo.
