• Friends praised for preparedness and quick thinking
• And calling the correct number: 021 937 0300
• In an emergency always think SAFE:
                STOP!
         Assess
         Formulate
         Execute

Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams responded to an incident on India Venster on Saturday afternoon, where a group of young hikers demonstrated how the right decisions can lead to a safe outcome.

Shortly after lunchtime, a 20-year-old member of the group, began experiencing severe and worsening cramps while ascending the route. The group, who had set out earlier that morning with plans to descend via Platteklip Gorge, were well prepared with adequate water, food, and warm clothing.

Recognising that their friend could no longer continue safely, the group did exactly what we encourage all outdoor users to do - they Stopped.

After a quick assessment they made the correct decision to call the emergency number - 021 937 0300.

Importantly, they stayed together, supported their friend, and when he was able, to carefully continued moving to a safer position while awaiting  assistance. Their calm, considered actions ensured that the situation did not escalate further.

Rescue teams, including members of SANParks - Table Mountain National Park, accessed the mountain via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and met the group near Fountain Ledge. After receiving medical care from a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic, the patient was slowly assisted up the trail to the upper cable station.

The incident was concluded, with everyone safely off the mountain at 17:11.

This incident is a powerful example of the SAFE approach in action:

• STOP!
• Assess the situation
• Formulate a plan
• Execute the plan
• = SAFE

The group’s preparedness, their decision to call for help early and their commitment to looking after one another played a critical role in the positive outcome.

In the outdoors, you are never just responsible for yourself,  you are part of a community. The actions of this group are a reminder that looking out for your mates can make all the difference.

Wherever you go, remember our call to action: Safe My Mate.
