Bystander Shot During Brazen Armed Robbery at Hayfields Jewellery Store

A community member was shot after a gang of brazen armed robbers opened fire on police as they fled the scene of a hit on a jewellery store in Hayfields on Saturday. 

Mi7 Emergency Medical Services was dispatched to the popular shopping complex on Saturday afternoon after multiple reports of a shooting that occurred there. It is believed a gang of seven armed men robbed a jewellery store before opening fire on police as they escaped. 

Initial reports from the scene suggest that the gang split themselves strategically. Four entered the store, while others stood off at points outside to keep watch. It is believed a police vehicle entered the shopping complex parking, unbeknownst to what was going on. One of the suspects keeping watch allegedly then opened fire on the vehicle as the others were fleeing. 

A community member was shot in the leg and was treated on scene by paramedics from another service provider before being taken to hospital. Mi7 teams, along with their counterparts from other service providers, also attended to staff and bystanders who were shocked and traumatised after the event. 

It is believed the gang made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery stolen from the store. 

Mi7 Strategic Threat Response Unit members have been tasked with assisting in a widescale search for the getaway vehicle currently underway.
