One person has been left in a critical condition following an attempted hijacking on the N2 Southbound Umgeni off-ramp on Monday.

It is believed that two armed suspects approached the victims  vehicle while traffic was moving slowly along the highway. The suspects allegedly attempted to hijack the vehicle but were unsuccessful. During the incident, the victim was shot before the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of valuables. The suspects reportedly escaped towards a nearby informal settlement.

KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services and Security Response Teams were dispatched after receiving reports from passing motorists requesting urgent assistance. Upon arrival, responders found the victim suffering from a serious gunshot wound. A Metro Police officer who was passing the scene stopped and assisted in securing the area until additional emergency services arrived.

The patient was stabilised on scene by KZN VIP medics before being transported in a critical condition to a nearby medical facility for further urgent medical treatment.

The circumstances leading up to the incident cannot be confirmed at this stage. SAPS will be conducting the necessary investigations.

All emergency services were in attendance.
