Police in Musina have recovered a hijacked Toyota Legend 50 and launched a manhunt for unknown suspects who allegedly opened fire on police officers during a high-speed chase on Saturday, 01 August 2026.

It is alleged that at approximately 18:00, members of Musina SAPS were conducting routine patrols along the N1 when they received information regarding two vehicles, a bronze Toyota Legend 50 and a white Isuzu, reportedly stolen in Leslie, Mpumalanga, and believed to be travelling via the Nzhelele Road.

Police spotted a bronze Toyota Legend 50 matching the circulated description and attempted to stop it. The driver failed to comply and sped off towards Musina, resulting in a high-speed chase.

Upon reaching the N1 near a local filling station, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the pursuing police officers, who returned fire. During the exchange, the suspects lost control of the vehicle, which crashed through a fence at a nearby farm. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the recovered Toyota Legend 50 had been hijacked from its lawful owner within the Leslie policing area in Mpumalanga.

A case of attempted murder is being investigated.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in locating the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Constable Gudani Mahavha, on 066 117 0496, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or may share information on the MySAPS App, or report at the nearest police station.

Investigations are continuing.
