MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Nakedi Kekana, has expressed condolences following a fatal multi-vehicle crash last night on the N1 at Ysterberg, outside Mokopane.
Four vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction collision. Four people died on the scene - two drivers and two passengers. Twelve others were injured, four critically, and taken to hospital. The cause is under investigation.
"On behalf of the Provincial Government, I send heartfelt condolences to the families. We wish the injured a speedy recovery," said MEC Kekana. She commended emergency personnel for their swift response. The road has been re-opened.
MEC Kekana has ordered intensified deployment on the N1 and other major routes ahead of a high-traffic weekend. Movement will be compounded by the long weekend, comprised of weddings, family gatherings and festivals which will increase traffic on all major roads and connecting roads.
Motorists are urged to avoid reckless overtaking, fatigue and drunk driving, and to ensure vehicles are roadworthy.
"One life lost is one too many. Let us arrive alive," she said.
