On 20 September 2026, at approximately 12:15, members of the Tshwane District Online Task Team were conducting crime prevention patrols in the Winterveldt area when they were approached by a man driving a blue Volkswagen Golf.
The man informed the members that he had travelled to Winterveldt in search of his friends, whom he suspected were being robbed. He explained that he had been speaking telephonically with one of them when he heard an unfamiliar voice in the background. The call was then terminated, and repeated attempts to contact his friend were unsuccessful.
The man further informed the members that, shortly before communication was lost, his friend had shared a live location with him via WhatsApp. As the live location was still active, the members immediately accompanied him to the indicated address at Nkuna Stand, Winterveldt.
Upon arrival, the members encountered approximately five African males. The men were approached and searched, and several cellular phones were found in their possession. The man who had alerted the police identified two of the cellular phones as belonging to his friends.
The members took the suspects to Loate SAPS for further investigation. Upon arrival at the police station, they encountered two victims who reported that they had been robbed. The victims positively identified some of the suspects as individuals who had been present during the robbery. They also identified the two recovered cellular phones as their property.
While the preliminary investigation was underway, the members received information about a suspicious vehicle parked near a well-known supermarket. They proceeded to the location and found a white Volkswagen Golf that had allegedly been taken during the armed robbery.
Approximately four African males were spotted near the vehicle. When they noticed the police vehicle, the men fled on foot. The members pursued them and managed to apprehend two suspects, who were subsequently linked to the armed robbery.
A total of six suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping, armed robbery and carjacking. The investigation is continuing to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other criminal activities.
