The Durban Metro Police Service can confirm that 10 people have sadly lost their lives following a serious taxi crash on Old Georgedale Road in Cato Ridge, near Hammarsdale, on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.

It is alleged that the taxi was traveling from Hammarsdale towards Cato Ridge when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The taxi then rolled into the bushes.

The following emergency services are currently working on scene, Durban Metro Police Service Search and Rescue unit and Cato Ridge members, Road Traffic Inspectorate, South African Police Service, Pietermaritzburg collision unit, Fire Department, Forensic Pathology services and ALS Paramedics.

Ten people were pronounced deceased.

Old Georgedale Road is affected by the crash and recovery operation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible, use alternative routes, and expect delays.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

The Durban Metro Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.

Motorists are urged to drive carefully in the area and give emergency and recovery teams enough space to work.
