
The Durban Metro Police Service Tactical Support Unit has arrested a Ugandan national and seized counterfeit cash estimated at R1.6 million during a raid at an upmarket flat in Umhlanga Ridge on Friday, 9 October 2026.
The operation followed information received by Covert Intelligence about suspicious movements at the flat. The TSU obtained a search warrant and carried out the operation with Port Shepston Hawks and Counter Narcotics KZN.
During the raid, members discovered that the flat was allegedly being used as a brothel. The suspect was also allegedly involved in a scheme known as Black Dollar, which involves counterfeit money.
The Local Criminal Record Centre attended the scene to collect fingerprints and DNA evidence from safes found inside the flat.
Members seized counterfeit cash estimated at R1.6 million, an iPhone 16, a safe and two passports belonging to the suspect with expired visas.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Durban North SAPS. He faces charges relating to the counterfeiting of currency, contravention of the South African Reserve Bank Act, keeping a brothel and illegal immigration.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates' Court on Monday, 12 October 2026.
