The Durban Metro Police Service confirms that a serious crash involving four vehicles occurred at about 08h45 on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, on the M4 Northbound, near Hyper by the Sea.
Initial reports indicate that a bakkie travelling north overturned and landed in the path of oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision involving other vehicles.
Sadly, one woman travelling in a light motor vehicle was declared dead. No serious injuries have been reported among the other occupants.
The Fire Department arrived promptly and extinguished the fire after the bakkie caught fire.
Durban Metro Police North, Search and Rescue, SAPS, eThekwini Fire Department, ALS Paramedics and Life Response are at the scene.
Traffic is being diverted at Riverside. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and approach the area with caution.
The SAPS Collision Unit is investigating the cause of the crash. The deceased will be removed from the vehicle once the investigation at the scene has been completed.
Motorists are urged to follow instructions from law enforcement officers and emergency personnel.
