Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa addressing the Buscor Road Safety and Driver Wellness Initiative
Acknowledge Buscor's significant contribution to public transport services and economic development in Mpumalanga.
Importantly, Road safety remains one of Government's key priorities.
Recent road safety data shows encouraging progress but also highlights the scale of the challenge that remains. From 1 January to 4 October 2026, South Africa recorded 7 635 road fatalities, representing a 9% reduction (760 fewer lives lost) compared to the same period in 2025.
In Mpumalanga, fatalities declined from 870 to 761, a reduction of 13%, exceeding the national target for the province.
Pedestrian safety remains a major concern nationally.
Although pedestrian fatalities decreased by 18%, from 3 890 to 3 196, pedestrians still account for approximately 42% of all road deaths.
Human behaviour continues to be the leading cause of serious crashes, contributing to approximately 88% of major crashes, with speeding, loss of vehicle control, dangerous overtaking and driving into oncoming traffic among the primary contributing
factors.
