An investigation is underway following an incident in which a man allegedly attacked his father with a blunt object and engaged in a shootout with police in Masoyi on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The man has since died.

It is reported that the suspect, who resided at Bhekiswayo Trust, attacked his father and then went to his father’s safe, which he damaged before taking a firearm and proceeding to a local tavern.

Community members alerted the police, who responded swiftly. Upon arrival, police found that the suspect had returned to his parental home and had locked himself inside, refusing to open the door.

Police gained entry through a window. It is further reported that the suspect fired a shot at a police officer, who sustained an injury. The police returned fire, injuring the suspect in the lower body.

Both the injured police officer and the suspect were taken to medical facilities for treatment, where the suspect later died.

In this regard, cases of attempted murder of the father, attempted murder of the police officer, possession of an unlicensed firearm and an inquest were opened for further investigation by both SAPS and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has wished the injured member a speedy recovery and commended the members for their swift response.
