An intelligence-driven operation has foiled a suspected ATM bombing following the interception of four suspects and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and a vehicle.
The operation was conducted in the early hours of Saturday, 24 October 2026, following intelligence received about suspects who were allegedly in possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives and were planning robberies, targeting ATMs at Zebediela in Limpopo province.
A multi-disciplinary team, comprising #SAPS units and private security partners, operationalised the intelligence to prevent the planned bombings.
The suspects allegedly spotted the operational team and attempted to flee, resulting in a pursuit. Their silver Toyota Starlet was subsequently intercepted along the R568 in the Vaalbank area.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two rifle magazines, 36 rounds of live rifle ammunition, and four cellphones. The vehicle was also seized for further investigation.
The operation involved the SAPS #NationalInterventionUnit (NIU), Ivory Park #CrimeIntelligence, Ivory Park #TaskTeam, Gauteng #ProvincialInvestigationUnit (PIU), Mpumalanga #LocalCriminalRecordCentre (LCRC), Fidelity ITOC, Vusela Risk Services, FNB PCM, ABSA Investigations and Safeguard Risk Services.
All four suspects aged 28, 30, 46 and 50 were arrested and are expected to appear before court soon.
Investigations are continuing to determine the suspects’ alleged involvement in other serious and violent crimes, including ATM bombings, CIT robberies and business robberies.
