EThekwini Municipality has placed its disaster management and emergency services teams on high alert after the South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 4 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms.
The warning is valid from 12h00 until 23h59 on Sunday, 1 November 2026, with heavy downpours, hail and severe lightning expected.
Teams are monitoring flood-prone areas, including low-lying communities and informal settlements, and are ready to respond to incidents such as flooding, damaged infrastructure and fallen trees blocking roads.
Disaster Management Director Vincent Ngubane said: "Our teams are closely monitoring areas prone to weather-related incidents, and resources are on standby to respond swiftly wherever they are needed. We urge residents to take the warning seriously and put their safety first."
Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to move valuables above the expected flood level, while rural residents should move livestock to higher ground.
Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible. Motorists should reduce speed and keep a safe following distance.
Residents must not cross flooded roads, rivers or swollen streams. Anyone trapped in a vehicle during a flood should leave it and move to higher ground.
Residents should follow the City's official platforms for updates.
