Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: To ensure the free flow of traffic, our Umdloti RTI team responded swiftly to a shooting incident this afternoon along the N2 Southbound, before the KwaMashu off-ramp.
According to a report from the RTI team, the driver of a red BMW has been taken to the hospital after a deadly assassination attempt that left him seriously injured.
The South African Police Service has taken over the crime scene with RTI redirecting the traffic.
In this regard, we request motorists to exercise extra caution.
Importantly, the southbound carriageway has been affected with three lanes closed and traffic only allowed to use the shoulder lane.
This morning we issued a statement indicating that we have deployed 688 RTI and Operation Shanela teams across the province.
From this figure, 77 officers are stationed in Durban.
We stated that our dedicated officers will ensure that there is safe and efficient movement of six million voters and election officials who will travel to 5028 voting stations.
We made this deployment, fully aware that road rage and traffic-related altercations during election periods may escalate due to heightened political activities and contestation.
Deployed throughout the province, this team of dedicated officers will therefore ensure that we have a secure voting environment.
The team will execute the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation and focus on the following: -
Unauthorised road closures: Disruption of traffic and road closures by unauthorized individuals will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly;
Traffic congestion: Monitor traffic flow - respond to hotspots and ensure visibility by patrolling major access routes;
Voting stationery transportation: Working with municipal traffic departments, our RTI and Operation Shanela Teams will provide escorts to SAPS and IEC officials where necessary;
Enforcement: There will be enforcement of traffic laws and promotion of road safety.
