A bus accident near Matatiele in the north of the Eastern Cape has claimed at least 30 lives this morning. The bus was travelling from Mvenyane village to Matatiele when a tyre apparently burst, sending it down a mountain at Kaka's Pass.

Paramedics are having a difficult time moving the injured up the mountain slopes to waiting ambulances on the road. Emergency services have called for helicopters from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to assist in moving the injured and the bodies.

There are also reports that some passengers are still trapped inside the wreck in the river.
