A man burnt to death in a car accident on the R21 in Johannesburg on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

"The man was steering his Mazda while it was being towed by his friend who was in an Opal Astra, at 2.30am," said spokesperson Aveline Hardaker.

Another man driving a BMW then crashed into the Mazda while it was being towed.

"The Mazda and the BMW collided with each other, and then rolled a number of times."

She said that the Mazda then caught alight, with the man still trapped inside.

"His friend tried to get him out, but to no avail and he eventually burnt to death. The driver of the BMW had also fled the scene by then.

"Two other people in the BMW were taken to hospital for minor injuries. The man in the Opal Astra was not hurt," Hardaker said.

Police were still looking for the BMW driver. A case of culpable homicide was opened. - Sapa
