Alcohol Breathalysers Partners with Arrivealive.co.za On South Africa’s First Customized Consumer Breathalyser

South Africa’s leading distributor of breath alcohol testers, Alcohol Breathalysers, and the country’s widest reaching road safety advocate and platform, www.ArriveAlive.co.za, have joined forces to customise a personal digital breathalyser for South Africans to encourage self-alcohol-testing as a solution to reducing alcohol-related road fatalities.

The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser will be accessible to all South African road users at a low cost, and for every purchase made, donations will be made to www.ArriveAlive.co.za to help the platform continue its advocacy work on road safety.

“The staggering number of road fatalities is one of the greatest challenges facing us in South Africa. Although public discourse on road safety is mostly around the Easter and Christmas seasons, countless people die on our roads every other day, throughout the year. Of all road deaths in South Africa, approximately 58% are related to alcohol and that is a chilling fact,” said Angus MacArthur, General Manager at Alcohol Breathalysers.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), road deaths cost the South African economy approximately 7.8% of the country’s GDP. With 58% of all road deaths attributed to alcohol consumption, the GDP loss as a result is about 4.5%. The human loss is even greater - families and loved ones suffer lifelong loss, trauma and poverty as a result. The urgency to respond to this road carnage cannot be emphasized enough and the Arrive Alive breathalyser is one solution to this carnage.

“We are excited to be bringing this life-saving device to South Africa in partnership with our long time counterpart, www.ArriveAlive.co.za We believe that this breathalyser will empower road users by equipping them with accurate knowledge of their alcohol consumption before any attempt to drive. We know that it will be the gateway for further discussion on other road safety issues. It is very important for us to own the responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others all the time, and this venture is one way for road users to do so,” concluded MacArthur.

Discussing stakeholders who play a role in road safety in South Africa, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has always maintained that it is only in working together that practical and lasting solutions to the carnage on our roads will be found. “Solutions to the carnage on our roads are going to be found through working together and taking South Africa forward,” she concluded.

“We know and understand that reducing road fatalities is a responsibility that does not sit with law enforcers alone - it is everyone’s responsibility. We all have to take action, and be proactive in our own efforts to ensure we are safe when driving; and self-testing is one such way. A first in South Africa, we hope that this breathalyser will get people more active in taking ownership of their own safety on the roads,” said Adv. Johan Jonck, patron of www.ArriveAlive.co.za.

The customized breathalyser is a high-end personal digital breathalyser that can be used up to 1,000 times without the need for recalibration. The gadget informs the user of their blood alcohol content and beyond that, opens up a universe of knowledge that truly empowers drivers. Information such as the effect of alcohol consumption on the body, understanding how units of alcohol are quantified, and other road safety concerns like rights and responsibilities of road users and road safety legislation, policy and enforcement.

The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser detects alcohol content in breath and uses that result to compute blood alcohol content (BAC%). To effectively use the device it requires a deep breath and blowing into the mouthpiece until the device beeps. The breathalyser calculates a reading and the result is displayed on the screen. As stipulated by road traffic legislation, a reading below 0.05% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) indicates that one is safe to drive and any reading from 0.05% BAC and above indicates a high blood alcohol level and it’s therefore illegal to drive. The SAPS and traffic police officers can and will arrest any driver who registers a reading of 0.05% BAC and above.

Alcohol Breathalysers has been in the business of safety for over eleven years, supplying and consulting to listed companies, small to medium scale enterprises, government departments and consumers. The corporation’s wide range of alcohol testing products have helped businesses countrywide to safeguard the safety of their employees and assests and in the process have saved millions of Rand; and consumers take ownership of their safety and in the process save lives and licences.

The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser is available immediately from www.breathalysers.co.za, www.ArriveAlive.co.za and www.takealot.com
